Black Swan
D&AD Student Awards 2012: Illustration Entry.
An original cover illustration for Little White Lies magazine, depicting the main character of Black Swan.
For my Final Major Project at university, I set out to explore the notion of ‘beautiful ugly’. I decided to channel this interesting contradiction by working towards a proposal for the launch of a new editorial publication. This included designing, branding and generating visual contents for a unique magazine.
The outcome is Burt: a niche art/culture/fashion publication set to celebrate the coming together of beauty and ugliness. Whether it is the awkward, absurd, vulnerable, flawed, mundane or unconventional – Burt is there to see the beauty in it, and lift if it for others to enjoy.
None of this is handed to you straight. The editorial narrative is comprised of deliberately confusing mix of different forms of literary art; prepare to be left perplexed.

Artwork commissioned by HSY to be displayed on the side of their vehicles as part of their “Waste Truck Art Project”
With cardboard as a subject matter, as I was asked to participate in HSY’s art project and help challenge people to see the value in recycling as well as in waste itself.
I aimed to play with the idea of “high art” and re-create one of the most well known and valuable pieces of art out there.
Using cardboard waste from my own household and waste I found discarded, I manually created this piece called ‘Girl with a Cardboard Earring’.
